Former US President Donald Trump has opposed Nigeria's move to ban Twitter - and called on other countries to follow suit.
"Congratulations to Nigeria, for shutting down Twitter for banning their President," he said in a statement.
The former president has called on other countries to follow suit and ban Facebook and Twitter "by restricting freedom of expression".
Bw. Trump was banned and on social media platforms Twitter and Facebook in January for allegedly publishing messages inciting a US parliamentary invasion. Five people died as a result of the incident.
In a statement on Monday, he lamented why he did not shut down Facebook and Twitter during his presidency.
"Who are
they to decide right and wrong if they themselves are bad? I think I would have
banned them when I was President. But [Facebook Founder Mark] Zuckerberg kept
calling me and coming to the White House for dinner telling me how good I
was," he said.
Last week Nigeria blocked Twitter accounts in the country on the grounds that "the online activities undermine Nigeria's presence as a federal state".
The move came days after President Muhammadu Buhari's message was removed for violating the rules of the social network.
It sparked outrage among Nigerians and western nations who said the move undermined democratic freedoms.
Both sides have said they are negotiating a settlement
