1 Overview

This study aimed to find out the effects of informal business on the pavement to road users. This chapter presents data presentations and discuss the findings of the study which were presented basing on three specific objectives. The presentations and discussions revolved around the three specific objectives of the study.

Data was collected from 85 actual respondents both females and males involving businessmen’s, road users, traffic police officers and region planer.   The population size of the study consisted sample size of 123 respondents who were targeted by the researcher to provide information about the study through questionnaires and interview. Respondents were selected randomly and purposively depending on their availability and willingness of providing information for the study.

The response rate depended on the availability and willingness of respondents to participate in the study by accepting to fill questionnaires that was administered so as to provide valid information for the study. Table 4.1 shows that, out of the total 104 questionnaires prepared to be administered by the researcher, only 73 questionnaires were responded and only 12 respondents responded to interview showing a response rate of 69.1% which is fair and representative according to (Mugenda, 2003) stated that, a response rate of >50.0% is required for analysis and representation of data.

3 Background information of the respondents

The demographic of this study included gender, level of education and work experience of respondents. It included age, marital status, gender, and experience of employees. Other information includes education level and total number of employees and their current position within the organization. The demographic information used in making generalizations about the total of respondents used in this study.

3.1 Age of Respondents

In this study, age of the respondents was considered to be important in, finding out the effects of informal business on the pavement to road users.

Table 4.2 above shows that the study involved respondents with age between 18-25 years who were 29(34.1%), respondents with age between 25-50 years were 41(48.2%) and above 50 years were 15(17.7%). The findings show that majority of the respondents who conduct their daily duties on business at Uhuru Kariakoo are aged in between 25 and 50 years.

3.2 Gender of the respondents     

The study involved gender distribution of respondents in order to answer the questionnaires a respond to interview provided as shown on the table 4.1 above.

Table 4.2 shows the second demographic factor considered in this study was gender of the respondents. This was done with an objective to find the differences in number of males and females living and conducting business alongside Uhuru road.

The result shows that, male respondents were 48(56.6%) and female respondents were 37(43.5%), hence the greater number of respondents were males than females.

3.3 Education level of the respondents

The information about respondent’s education level who are engaged in business are presented in table 4.2. The level of education of respondents was an important factor for the study to see if it is helping respondents to use their professional qualification to perform well in daily individual tasks and government tasks. The study revealed that majority of respondents 24(28.3%) were holders of certificates, followed by 21(24.7%) having secondary education, 17(20.0%) holding bachelor degree and above, 13(15.4%) those with primary education and 10(11.6%) having diploma qualifications. Therefore, the level of education to each group shows that majority of respondents were educated holding certificates and secondary education.

3.4 Work experience of respondents

The information about years of relevant experience at Uhuru road are presented in table 4.2 above. The results show that, majority, 34(40%) have working experience for the period of about 5 to 10 years, 32(37.6%) have working experience for period about 1 to 5 years and 19(22.4%) have working experience for the period of over 11 years. The findings show that different governmental and private organization engaging in road safety and business are well staffed with this situation since it has lasted for many years and having more experienced business men’s.
